In case you’ve been away from Facebook for quite some time, Atty. Bruce Rivera is one Duterte’s staunchest defenders on social media.
When another Duterte defender in the name of Mocha Uson has been subjected to vicious personal attacks following her appointment to a government position, Rivera wasted no time in defending her on social media.
On Friday, May 12, 2017, Rivera took to Facebook and wrote an emotional prose explaining why he defend underdogs like Mocha Uson and Duterte because like them, he is an underdog.
So if you are one of Mocha’s critics who continue to question her qualification to deserve such lofty post in the Duterte government, Rivera has a something for you ponder upon.
“You see, many wonder why Mocha has 5 million followers. Simple. Everyone who supports her are the same underdogs you all look down on. The Have Nots. And we are the same underdogs who placed Duterte in power because we just got tired of the The Haves trying to control us.”

WHY I DEFEND UNDERDOGS
Let us face it. Life is unfair. Someone is always better, richer, more influential, more intelligent, happier, prettier and it sucks. Life is always like that. And the more you accept this cold, hard fact, the easier for you to accept and deal with it. If life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. In my case, life gave me overripe tomatoes, so I made salsa.
I grew up gay, poor and my pedigree is underwhelming. I was a descendent of farmers on the Ilocano and teachers on the Bisaya side. I was sexually-abused as a child, became a contesera joining gay pageants in the 90’s to support my sister’s education until I became a lawyer and a law professor.
With the little I have, I made something of myself. I am not great but nobody expected me to even finish college and if this is the best I can do, I will be happy and proud because I see the pride in my mother’s eyes. When I measure a persons success, I will always take into account what they have been through to get to where they are. If you have parents who can send you to Harvard and you manage to graduate in Wharton, I give props. But it will not gain my awe. If you have very poor parents who can only manage to earn minimum and you manage to graduate in a reputable school in the Philippines, then you have my respect.
In short, I will always root for the underdog. Duh, I am one of them.
We live in a society where social discrimination became the official argument of the privileged. Those who are born to a life not worrying about food look down on people who sell their bodies so they can get to the next meal but allow their bodies to be ravaged for pleasure’s sake and claim it is okey for a long as she was not paid to do it. Malandi dahil nagpabayad at nagpakita pero kung walang pera, trip trip lang. No harm done.
Underdogs like myself, do what we have to do to survive in life. We do not have influential parents who can afford to make us the English speaking bitches like most of our tormentors. We scrape, scratch and fight our way through life because if we gave up, no one will save us. Not even God.
Like Mocha, I do not have a privileged life. Mocha had to use the stage to craft out a living being naughty and sexual. She showed her body and yes, it was because she needed to live. I allowed people to see me in gay pageants because I needed the money and I knew I was beautiful enough to earn from it. And yes, if I were placed in Mocha’s situation, there would be lawyers or even hypocritical religious fathers calling me names like the privileged women have been calling Mocha. Remember the tagline, SuperSiReyna lawyer to the point that a gay lawyer had the gall to call me lacking of credibility because I dress up in womens clothes and a clown because I chose to have a sense of humor. This, despite his unremarkable resume. That is what will happen if I had the misfortune of getting appointed. Good thing, that will never happen.
Mocha was all you claim to be. She did not hide her nude pictures, her sordid past and her “mistakes” in the past. But she did it all so she can live. Lucky for those who attack her, you did not have to do what she had to do because you got lucky in the lottery of life.
You see, many wonder why Mocha has 5 million followers. Simple. Everyone who supports her are the same underdogs you all look down on. The Have Nots. And we are the same underdogs who placed Duterte in power because we just got tired of the The Haves trying to control us.
The next time you attempt to demean any underdog, you may ask yourself what he or she has not achieved and tell yourself, that is expected. But ask yourself what you have achieved as well. And then I will tell you, that is also expected.
So, if you are just a college graduate like Mocha and yet, Mocha got more followers, more recognition, more admiration…
WHAT IS YOUR EXCUSE FOR BEING SO UNDERWHELMING?
