Confusing. Devious! This is how lady lawyer describes the news George Clooney’s wife will represent Maria Ressa in local court

Did you read the news? George Clooney’s wife, Amal Clooney and her law firm will represent Maria Ressa in her cases in the Philippine court.

In their statement, Clooney said they will also “defend press freedom, vindicate Ressa’s rights and the rule of law in the Philippines.”

However, lawyer Trixie Cruz-Angeles said she finds the news of Amal Clooney representing Maria Ressa in local court confusing no devious.

Devious because Amal Clooney knows she cannot represent in the local court but despite that, she is forcing herself into the Maria Ressa case with nothing but ulterior motives.

Angeles explains that the Rules of Court provide limitations on the practice of law, which are reserved only for Philippine citizens (subject to exceptions prior to 1946) who have passed the Philippine bar examinations.

Meanwhile, Angeles predicted George Clooney’s wife, Amal will work a local law firm who will appear on Ressa’s behalf and either prosecute or defend the cases in court.

So what is the purpose of Amal Clooney’s presence?

Angeles offered (2) possible reasons to explain Amal Clooney and her firm will represent as Maria Ressa’s lawyer.

  1. Spy on our local courts and the PH justice system, find its flaws and report it to international bodies that the rule of law in the PH, the impartiality of our courts have been compromised and convince the international bodies the PH justice system isn’t completely functioning anymore.
  2. Awal Clooney gives Maria Ressa the international audience. The plan is to spin or paint the procedure in such a way to easily get the international support, should their cases faces stiff opposition or go south (fail).

Angeles ended the FB post cautioning the DDS not to be complacent because the enemies are buying the heaviest power on their arsenal.

Confusing? No. Devious.

The newspapers are full of the news that Amal Clooney and her law firm which specializes in human rights and international law, will represent/defend Maria Ressa. In their statement they say that they will also defend press freedom, vindicate her (Ressa’s) rights and the rule of law in the Philippines.

The Rules of Court strictly provide for limitations on the practise of law which are for Philippine citizens only (subject to exceptions prior to 1946) who have passed the Philippine bar examinations.

In all likelihood, Ms. Clooney’s firm will be working with a local law office who will appear on Ressa’s behalf and either prosecute or defend the cases in court.

So, what is the use of Ms. Clooney’s presence?

Well, first, they are likely to be looking at the local cases so they can make a case with international bodies to indicate that the rule of law, the impartiality of courts have been compromised to the point where they can argue that recourse to these are not available because they are not completely functioning anymore.

Second, Ms. Clooney gives Ressa an international spotlight. The purpose is to spin or characterize the procedures in such as way to easily get international support, should their cases go south (fail) or encounter heavy opposition.

We should not be dismissive of these turn of events. Clearly the administration’s enemies are loading up on the legal firepower. They have not succeeded yet. But it isn’t over.
