On January 26, 2017, Forbes.com published an article penned by Panos Mourdoukoutas who says the “Philippines is getting more corrupt under Duterte”.
Blogger Sass Rogando Sasot says Mr. Mourdoukoutas got it all wrong. Here’s what Sasot has to say:
The problem is the writer WRONGLY interpreted the 2016 Corruption Perception Index of Transparency International, an international non-government organization dedicated to fighting corruption.
Sasot explained: “Ang tiningnan ng writer ay ang ranking at hindi ang score ng Pilipinas. Dapat ang tiningnan ng writer ay ang CORRUPTION PERCEPTION INDEX SCORE. Transparency International actually uses the SCORE and not the ranking to determine how corrupt the country is.” (The writer was looking at the ranking and not the score of the Philippines. Supposedly, the writer should be looking at the CORRUPTION PERCEPTION INDEX SCORE. Transparency International actually uses the SCORE and not the ranking to determine how corrupt the country is.)
Ito ang scores ng Pilipinas from 2012-2016
2012 – 34
2013 – 36
2014 – 38
2015 – 35
2016 – 35
“The closer the country’s score to 100 = less corrupt, closer to 0 = more corrupt,” Sasot asserted.
Sasot cited the corruption perception index score of the Philippines from 2015-2016 hasn’t changed.
“Makikita natin na hindi nagbago ang corruption perception index score ng Pilipinas from 2015-2016,” Sasot said in an exasperated tone.
She noted that only 2 countries in the Asia-Pacific region has gone from bad to worse and the Philippines is not among them.
In fact, ayon sa Transparency International mismo na gumawa ng index, DALAWANG BANSA lang po sa Asia-Pacific ang naging WORSE ang condition ng corruption nila: Cambodia and Thailand.
Netizens couldn’t help but speculate that a prominent anti-Duterte personality is pulling strings to put the Duterte administration in a bad light.
If the accusation against the Forbes writer is true, then he is no different than what Newt Gingrich said about mainstream media, “They aren’t reporters. They’re PROPAGANDISTS!!!”
