“What a great day!” I can’t resist borrowing Jim Paredes’ line to gloat at Rappler and the rest of her pals having been caught once again peddling fake news.
British-American actress Hayley Atwell just issued an official statement on Instagram belying the spin from yellow media that she cancelled her Manila trip due to political unrest.
On Instagram, Hayley Atwell aka Agent Peggy Carter in the first two “Captain America” movies posted a hand-written note citing the reason of her cancelled Manila visit. You may visit the link here.
Supposedly, British-American actress Hayley Atwell’s aka Agent Peggy Carter in the first two “Captain America” movies, will visit Manila for Comiccon Asia 2018.
Excitement among Hayley Atwell’s Filipino fans was soon replaced with disappointment as reports from the local major news outlets like ABS-CBN News, including news website Rappler reported that the British-American actress cancelled the Manila trip, citing “political unrest”. CNN Philippines followed suit and broke the news on its Facebook page.

The news trended immediately on various social media platforms and the fans reaction were varied.
On Twitter, Ghene Snowdon (@ghenesnowdon) asked:
“Huh? Haley Atwell cancelled her trip to comicon asian because of perceived instability in the Philippines? Where the f did she get that idea from? Picture from my recent trip to #Mindanao #Philippines #haleyatwell”

On Facebook, Ritche Chu wrotes: “Well its her Perception anyways. her loss not ours.. who’s the one promoting something? and what’s ComicCon has to do with politics?”
Jhef de Vibar told Atwell to stay in the US and mind their issues back home. “Our society is still at peace under Duterte even without you. And who are you again? Lol. Stay in the US with your rampant mass shooting and racism.”
In light of Hayley Atwell’s Instagram statement denying earlier reports she cancelled the Manila trip due to “perceived political unrest”, VoVph took to Facebook rubbing salt at the wounded pride of the highly embarrassed local mainstream media. On Facebook, VoVph posted a meme with the taunting caption:
“Hello Mainstream. PR Stunt ng ComicCon Asia #EPICFAIL”
Netizen Dennis B. Vicera remarked that this is not news because traditional media have been peddling fake news ever since and cited EDSA 1 as a product of fake news. “Matagal nang talamak ang FAKE NEWS sa Traditional Media. Kaya nga nagkaroon nang EDSA Peoples Power noong 1986 against President Marcos ay dahil NAUTO ng FAKE NEWS ng mga BAYARANG PRESS ang taumbayan. Ang EDSA 1 ay produkto ng TRADITIONAL MEDIA FAKE NEWS!”
Lita Laslo wrote: “#FakeNews was #Spread by Philippines Media !Shame on you.”
Meanwhile, some netizens couldn’t help but took a swipe at Grace Poe.
Jeffrey De Felipe Janeo wrote: “Grace poe?ano masasabi mo dito?bloggers lng ba kaya mo?asus!…”
Rodolfo Torres joined Janeo in seeking Senator Poe’s opinion on the controversy: “Grace Poe, please COMMENT and REMEMBER that TIME is running out, soon it WILL be 2019…. or JUNK your Political Career…”
