If carrying 50 kgs of load, walk 2 kms is hard enough to scratch a living, now imagine doing all of this with one leg?

Facebook user Lodalina Tomon shared the inspiring story of a young man, whose disability did not stop him from working to earn a living.  But this is not your ordinary day job.

According to her, Allan Aguilar from Brgy. Mabicay, Sogod Southern Leyte works as a porter, whose job requires transporting 50 kgs of load from the upland to the lowland for a small amount.

The average distance Allan walks is 2 kilometers,  one way.

Even for able-bodied men, this job is not a cakewalk.

Now, imagine if you are in Allan’s shoes, one-legged, carrying 50kgs load on your head and walk with a crutch, do you think this is an easy job?

Allan’s family is poor and their means of livelihood were harvesting rattan in the forest in Mindanao and sell it to businessmen in the rattan furniture making.

His father told to stop attending school while Allan was still in Grade 1 because his father needs a hand to work in the forest.

This is common among poor families in the rural areas, asking their children to help them, especially labor-intensive livelihood that an additional hand means extra income.

One day, while harvesting rattan, Allan met an accident that required an amputation for the badly injured leg.

Ten years ago (1997) Allan’s aunt brought him to Sogod Southern Leyte because his brother-in-laws maltreated him.

In Sogod, Allan learned how to work hard with one leg to eke out a living and being a porter is one of the most in demand jobs in the mountain barangays that even the trike taxi (habal-habal) dare not tread.

Chopped wood for cooking, copra, bananas, coal from timber and many other products from the upland are Allan’s  usual customers.

Lodalina hoped Allan’s story inspires people to earn an honest living despite their physical disabilities.

Siya po si Allan Aguilar ng Brgy.Mabicay.Sogod Southern Leyte.
