International commodities trader compares average price of rice during Pnoy and Duterte presidency. And the winner is?

WAG PADALA SA ‘SELECTIVE AMNESIA’

This is the friendly reminder from international commodities trader and social media blogger MJ Quiambao to her friends whom she overheard saying they started to dislike Duterte because ever since he became President the prices of commodities have been increasing. Very expensive, even rice.

Reyes said this is not entirely true.

Reyes admitted that there are a growing number people who have started to feel this way and she understands it.

But to set the record straight, Reyes couldn’t help but share an old Facebook post comparing the prices of rice in 2010 and 2014.

Finally, she compared the price of rice in 2014 (Pnoy’s term) to 2018. And her conclusion? The average price of rice under the Duterte admin is cheaper compared in Pnoy’s term. So far!

Note, Reyes did not provide the prices of rice (we’re talking commercial rice) in 2015 and 2016, months before Duterte assumed the presidency.

Reyes also recalled from memory the prices of other products that people commonly buy like 11 kg gasul and garlic, claiming their prices are much lower today than during Pnoy’s presidency.

In addition, Reyes admitted that the prices of imported products like chocolates and corned beefs did increase, including local processed goods with high sugar content.

WAG PADALA SA ‘SELECTIVE AMNESIA’

Someone close to me recently said:

“Ayoko kay Duterte. Nagtaasan lahat ng presyo mula ng naging presidente sya. Ang mahal mahal na ultimo bigas!”

I understand that a growing number of people has started to feel the same way.

While I respect their opinion and dislike of Duterte, I thought I should at least share this 2014 FB post (below) to try to put things in perspective and help others get better informed.

The photo below was taken sometime 2014.

Note:

Price of rice prior Duterte ranges from Php32 to Php58/kilo or an average of Php45/kilo (Year 2014).

As of writing and as I was informed this morning, NFA rice is now at Php27/kilo.

I recently bought commercial rice for our family’s consumption at Php42/kilo which is much lower than the Php46-48/kilo I used to buy in 2014-2015.

And oh, I also bought garlic @ Php45 for half a kilo–way lower than the Php350/kilo garlic in the past.

Then of course, the 11-kg gasul (content) which used to be Php900-1,100 in 2012-2013 is now @ Php680-720.

I must agree, though, that prices of imported chocolates, imported corned beef, and local processed goods (especially those with high sugar content) did increase.

P.S.
Pagdating po talaga sa presyo ng bilihin, I have a ‘photogenic memory’ 😂

Netizen Marilyn De Lima agrees with MJ Reyes observation.

Kris Toff shares personal experience attesting MJ Reyes is telling the truth.

“Nagpunta kmi ng bagyo I’m not sure kung July 2015 o January 2016 un pero ang mhal tlga ng bigas dun nasa 56/kilo.

On one hand, netizen Mark Ocampo disagrees with MJ Reyes.

You dont understand, kahit maghalungkat ka ng masisisi dati, yung presyo dati kahit tumaas, at least nakontrol and eventually bumaba ulit. Yung ngayon pataas ng pataas dinagdagan pa ng taxes.”

Netizen Jonathan Glenn Ramos slams Ocampo for complaining while demanding service from the government.

“so you question the additional taxes. but you want more service from the government? duh!”
