Lawyer explains to Leni Robredo what President Duterte meant, “the Presidency is not a woman’s job”

As expected, VP Leni Robredo has something to say on President Duterte telling Sara Duterte not to run for President because it is a man’s job to that effect. [CNN PH]

VP Leni Robredo commented that if the statement came from the mouth of the President himself, it does not help. She mentioned about a campaign and the President’s statement deflates it. Robredo advised the President to be circumspect in making statements because he is not an ordinary person. She said she is not speaking for Sara Duterte or for her but for any known women leaders. A leader’s view that women are inferior has an effect on all Filipino women.

“Ang Patola, bow!”

This was the initial reaction of Atty. Nick Nañgit of the FB page Nick Nañgit – NCN Law to VP Leni Robredo’s statement on President Duterte’s statement that the Presidency is not a woman’s job.

Atty. Nick began by clarifying from Robredo what campaign she was talking about? Atty. Nick remarked that Robredo is attempting to fool people once again and dragged women including ^GBTQ@+++ to gain sympathy when in fact, gender equality was not even mentioned. He uttered that Robredo’s comprehension level is very poor.

Second, Atty. Nick reminded Robredo that there is such a thing as “read in context” or in this case, “listen to it in context”. Atty. Nick went on to explain that President Duterte’s point was that, the President’s job is a tough job and it requires that the next President is tough and intelligent. Atty. Nick remarked that definitely, Robredo isn’t fit to become the next President unless she possesses those attributes.

“Pangalawa, may tinatawag na “read it in context” or, in this case, “listen to it in context”. Pwede rin iyan pumasok sa simpleng “expression”, “idiom”, o “figure of speech”. Pag sinabi bang “no man is an island” o “manpower” o “man the craft” e ang mga babae ay hindi kasama?

And lastly, Atty. Nick reckoned that even the daughter of the President, who is a girl, did not even react what her father said. And even majority of the Filipino women.
