For mimicking President Duterte’s thick Visayan accent i.e ‘armed stragol’, trabol’ etc., Raissa Robles and Edwin Lacierda has been getting a lot of flak on social media.
While the writer Raissa Robles, a known LP ally and one of the noisiest anti-Duterte critics, may have mimicked Duterte’s accent to elicit laughs from her twitter followers in particular, netizens, especially those from the Visayas-Mindanao areas didn’t funny Robles’ joke very funny.
To make matter worse, former Malacanang spokesman Edwin Lacierda joined Raissa Robles’ “ape Duterte’s Visayan accent” charade with his own tweet mimicking President’s pronunciation of trouble with ‘trabol’.
The Robles-Lacierda’s mocking tweets spread on Facebook like wildfire when angry netizens hit Facebook’s share button until their fingers become sore.
Manila Bulletin editor and writer Krizette Laureta Chu led the charge in calling fellow Visayans to boycott of Lacierda and the rest of the LP senatorial candidates in the 2019 national election.
TO ALL THE BISAYAS, WARAYS, ILONGGOS, HILIGAYNONS, LAHAT LAHAT NG HINDI KASING PERPEK NI Edwin Lacierda. REMEMBER THIS WHEN HE CAMPAIGNS IN YOUR PROVINCE.
REMEMBER HOW HE MAKES FUN OF THE PRESIDENT’S, A BISAYA, INTONATION, LANGUAGE, AND DICTION.
OLOL KA, EDWIN LACIERDA. PAKYO KA NEM EROY
Krizette Chu’s FB post elicited mixed reactions on Facebook, mostly angry comments. Check out a sample of the comments below.
Marjorie Condes Nemeroy 😹🤣👏 Why do we always have to follow the American way of speaking?? English as an international language gets a different intonation and pronunciation depending on where it is spoken. Nalulula kau sa French, Italian or British accent, tas tatawanan nyo ang Filipino accent. Even the southern part of the US and many of its citizens can’t speak their own language correctly. I have long gave up imitating the trashy slang of California English. Eeewww!!! #ipokrito #plastic #pakamakarit
Sheikha Naive You dont hear native english speakers pronounce words such as trouble, google, etc as trouBEL, gooGEL. Actually sounds ridiculous
After Krizette Chu’s FB post trended on Facebook, who BTW hails from Leyte,
another FB post condemning and denouncing Robles and Lacierda’s condescending tweet on Cebuano-speaking people for their thick-accent has been making the rounds online.
Ferdausi Saniel Cerna of UP Cebu posted a screenshot of the angry reaction of Magnus Historae in response to Robles and Lacierda’s tweet.
In the Facebook post, Historae, a native of Mindanao, opened the FB post by asking Lacierda and Robles if their impeccable knowledge of the English language make them superior over their Visayas and Mindanao counterparts.
On that note, Historae followed up his earlier question asking Robles and Lacierda that since the Germans, French, Italians and Russians barely speak English or none at all, does it follow the two will also make fun of them?
Historae asked if they (Europeans) are lower than Lacierda and Robles since they cannot pronounce the English words as perfectly as the two of them?
Historae couldn’t contain his emotions and called the two rude and ill-mannered.
He commented that is the common lot of people out there. Both are bigots who discriminates people from the provinces, especially from the Visayas and Mindanao because they of their peculiar pronunciation in the English language.
He also remarked that the likes of Lacierda and Robles thinks they have the only right to be exalted.
