Former DLSU History Professor has noted that the anti-Duterte’s are calling President Duterte the “teflon” President.
For the uninitiated like me, I need the help of Google to fully grasp what “teflon” means when the word is used to describe a politician.
I remember reading an article about former US President Ronald Reagan and many times he was referred as the “Teflon President” and I was embarrassed to admit, I never understand what the writer meant at that time.
Thanks to Google and here’s the simple and easy to understand explanation of teflon president.
“The term “Teflon president” describes a president who has a seemingly magical ability to avoid blame. A Teflon president is so charismatic that — like a Teflon pan — nothing unwanted can stick to him. No matter how much dirt his opponents uncover, the voters forgive him for it. [Link here]
Moving forward, Prof. Ybiernas offered same explanation but he forgot to mention the part that says, “it does not stick because the President is charismatic or popular, no matter how much dirt his opponents uncover, the people forgive him for it.”
Prof. Ybiernas laughed at those political scientist who likes to use teflon to describe President Duterte. To use teflon to explain the Duterte phenomenon is a mistake, the former DLSU professor said.
The former DLSU professor offered his simple explanation of the Duterte phenomenon.
According to him, Duterte was very popular in Davao City and the Davaoenos know Duterte very well, his attitude and how responds to insults against him.
Ybiernas continued: What Duterte needed to do when he ran for President, was to introduce himself to the entire country just as how Davao knew him as a person.
Once Duterte did it, the public was not shocked to hear how he speaks or acts. The public know it is Duterte’s trademark.
At this point, Prof. Ybiernas stressed the importance of a clear branding of the President. When the public hear the word “Rodrigo Duterte”, the public know what they expect of the President.
So everytime the President does or say something, the public will try to understand him. Because they know the President very well. That’s very clear!
“So kada may gawin o sabihin yan taumbayan na mismo ang umuunawa.
“Kasi kilala nila ang pangulo. Alam nila kung bakit nya ginawa yung ginawa nya, bakit sinabi yung sinabi nya.
“Kilala ng taumbayan si Rodrigo Duterte. NAPAKALINAW NYAN.
Meanwhile, Ybiernas noted that Robredo’s problem is branding.
Prof. Ybiernas said that Robredo is also known to the public and what kind of politician Robredo is. Unfortunately for Robredo, Prof. Ybiernas remarked that the VP is identified by the public as EPAL. That he said is very clear to the public.
Epal sa Luneta tuwing independence day.
