This latest Leni Robredo gaffe on Spratly issue turns VP into the national laughing stock on social media

VP Leni Robredo has been caught often making gaffes while trying to score political points against President Duterte and the government.

But, upon careful scrutiny, it was discovered she was making false assumptions or using wrong information.

For example, during a forum on West Philippine Sea at UP Diliman, VP Robredo made a remark about the Panatag Shoal incident involving the Filipino fishermen and Chinese Coast Guard, that sounded ok to the untrained ears.

“We soften our stance on the West Philippine Sea to avoid conflict, but the conflict we seem to be scared of is already at our doors. Our fisherfolk are physically restrained with guns, ammunitions, ships, and intimidation, to prevent them from fishing in waters that have already been affirmed as part of our Philippine territory.” Philippine Daily Inquirer, June 12, 2018

However to international relations and policy expert in the person of Sass Rogando Sasot, VP Robredo got caught peddling fake news.

Here’s what Sasot wrote on Facebook today, pointing out Robredo’s fake news.

FAKE NEWS OF LENI ROBREDO

Robredo said: “… to prevent them from fishing in waters that have already been affirmed as part of our Philippine territory.”

Who affirmed that? The only water that is well within any country’s territory is 12NM from its baseline. Is China in our 12NM territorial waters?

The waters that you might be referring to are the waters of Scarborough Shoal? Who affirmed that the shoal is part of our territory? NONE.

The Arbitration Decision affirmed that the waters in the Scarbrough Shoal are TRADITIONAL FISHING GROUNDS of Vietnamese, Chinese, and Filipinos.

One netizen named Mick Rubio asked Sass to cite the UNCLOS declaration that says Scarborough Shoal is the traditional fishing grounds for the Vietnamese, Chinese and Filipinos.

“Hi Sass, may you please elaborate please, and on what page of the Arbitration Decision is the statement that Scarborough Shoal is declared by UNCLOS to be traditional fishing grounds for the Vietnamese, Chinese and Filipinos. I am having difficulty searching for it on the 501 pages of the Arbitration Decision. Thanks.”

Sass replied by posting a screenshot of the UNCLOS ruling to satisfy the netizen’s curiosity so to speak.

For committing a gaffe, Leni Robredo has been at the receiving end of ridicule among Sasot’s Facebook followers.

Nico Laudit: “Lenilugaw should understand foreign relations…not YELLOWSHIT foreign relation understanding as perpetuated by Mr. Heydarian …troliling trollanes and Alejano aka utak alimango…

Try sending invite to your talk encounters Ms. Sass…so their loudmouth will be shut up!”

Del Sol Barcelona: “As expected a fake VP will say a fake news! May naniniwala pa ba? Paliwanag mo na lang paano nabasa ang balota sa contested provinces kaht water proof ang Ballot boxes!”

Lovely Tanhueco Juncaj: “Nakakahiyang linelecture pa ni Ma’am Sass ang VP ng pinas… Susmaryosep Leni? Anong pinapakaing meryenda sayo ng LP at la ka alam sa teritoryo ng bansa… Hanggang Naga lang ata utak ni Madam… Patawarin po natin sya…”

Any harsh reaction?
