Veteran journalist schools South China Sea dispute expert Acting SC Justice Carpio for mistaking Paracels as PH territory?

Acting SC Justice Antonio Carpio has been very vocal against President Duterte especially his handling on issue of the disputed Spratly Islands.

The acting CJ has positioned himself as the prominent expert on the South China Sea dispute and spoke lengthily on the topic in various fora. Link here.

In 2017, he was part of the legal team that successfully argued the Philippines’ challenge to China’s claim to nearly all of the South China Sea before the UN-backed Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague. [Inquirer]

When the news that Chinese bomber planes landed on Woody Island in the Paracels made headlines, Carpio wasted no time in lecturing President Duterte about the need to assert our territorial claims.

“Any self-respecting sovereign state will immediately formally protest such encroachment on its sovereignty and sovereign rights. The Philippines must do no less.”

But even before Acting Chief Justice Antonio Carpio could start celebrating for embarrassing Duterte in front of the local and international media, veteran journalist Bobi Tiglao decided to play the spoiler’s role and ruined Carpio’s parade.

VP Leni Robredo also did not escape Tiglao’s wrath and received tongue-lashing from the veteran journalist.

“CARPIO AND ROBREDO SHOULD LOOK AT THE MAP FIRST BEFORE THEY OPEN THEIR MOUTHS

Carpio on the landing of a Chinese bomber on Woody island in the Paracels:

“Any self-respecting sovereign state will immediately formally protest such encroachment on its sovereignty and sovereign rights. The Philippines must do no less.”

The Paracels are claimed only by China and Vietnam, and we don’t. China in 1974 occupied it, after defeating a force of Vietnamese, resulting in 54 Vietnamese soldiers and navymen killed.

Did Vietnam file a diplomatic protest against the Chinese landing of a bomber in Woody Island? Its foreign ministry spokesman expressed serious concerns and said it raised tensions in the area. BUT IT DID NOT FILE A DIPLOMATIC PROTEST.

Vice President Robredo even claimed Woody island is ours, and issued a statement: “The news about the landing of the Chinese bombers on our islands is extremely worrisome. Aside from this, the landing and take-off exercises of China in the West Philippine Sea using their long-range bombers is alarming.”

Nampucha oo kung sinunod pala ni Duterte itong Supreme Court justice na ito at si Robredo e pinasubo tayo, at katawa- tawa sa buong mundo. Pa self-respecting self-respecting pa daw.”
