Video: Soldier’s touching farewell with wife, family before leaving for Marawi, social media cries with them

A powerful video showing how wars can drive strong men, trained to kill and get killed, to tears when they said their farewells to their loved ones.

Journalist Rena Serion Manubag of IBC 13 captured the emotional farewells of the 82nd Infantry Batallion based in Miag-ao, Iloilo during the send off ceremonies before departing for Marawi to fight the Muate and Abu Sayyaf militants.

In the video below, an Army soldier can be seen trying to hold back his tears but failed while he bade farewell to his wife. The couple hugged for a few seconds which was cut abruptly when an old man, probably the father of the soldier, tapped the wife of soldier, telling her something and moved away while holding back tears of his own.

The soldier was about to turn his back but couldn’t resist the chance to give his wife another hug while his eyes welled with tears. He tapped the shoulder of the young man who was standing nearby before moving away.

The journalist wrote a caption to describe the dramatic scene that reads:

“Sinumpaan namin na ipaglaban ang bayan, at protektahan ang Sambayanang Pilipino. Dalawang bagay lang ang mangyayari, makakauwi ng patay o makakauwi ng buhay dala ang tagumpay” – mga salitang binitiwan ng mga sundalo bago makipagbakbakan sa giyera sa Marawi.

God Bless our Soldiers, Defend the land, Protect the People, Protect the Country 🇵🇭 🇵🇭 🇵🇭
Pray for Marawi 🙏 🙏 🙏”
