Viral photos of this time-honored new grad UP Diliman students draw backlash on social media

The University of the Philippines is the country’s top university and ranked 156 in the top 200 Universities in Asia in 2018.

In addition, UP is the only university in the Philippines listed in the World University Rankings 2018. [Link here]

Aside from its reputation of being the country’s top school, UP also prided itself as the bastion of student activism and freedom of speech.

True to its reputation, the new graduates of UP Diliman did their traditional lighting protest rally on Sunday after the conclusion of their commencement exercise.

The Philippines Star was there to capture photos of the placard-bearing new graduates, expressing various opinions on different issues against the government and the US government.

The photos of the placard-bearing and obviously anti-government posturing of the new UP graduates has divided the opinion of social media, mostly critical against the UP students who enjoy government support like free tuition and subsidies but always the first in criticizing the government.
