In case you’re wondering where Duterte is coming from following his tirade against the former Colombian president Cesar Gaviria, here’s the post from Facebook user Van Ybiernas and it should help you understand why.
Look, Colombia wasn’t consuming cocaine. Cocaine was more precious than gold for the price it fetched in Miami and New York. Cocaine was a Colombian export in the same way —only in greater magnitude— that bananas are a Philippine export.
Cocaine was bringing in BILLIONS of dollars into Colombia. It was employing a lot of unemployed poor people in Medellin and elsewhere. Pablo was opening schools, building churches, orphanages, putting up (funds for) housing and other services. Cocaine was jumpstarting the Antioquian —and even Colombian— economy in the same way OFW remittances are the lifeblood of the Philippine economy.
Cocaine —if you remove the moral and ethical considerations— was a God-send to Colombia.
Viva el cocaina! Viva! Viva!
Trouble began when Gaviria buckled to American pressure to stop the profitable cocaine trade into the United States.
Compare it with the Philippines. We are a net consumer of shabu. It does not do much for the economy. Shabu money isn’t being used to put up schools, orphanages, churches, etc. Ang shabu ay peste para sa Pilipinas.
Tanginang yan! Nabasa mo lang yung sinabi ni Cesar Gaviria, di na gumana ang brain cells mong hayup ka! Kunsabagay, baka wala naman talagang brain cells to begin with..
