Atty. Glenn Chong fears whitewash of alleged hacking of COMELEC servers, wants independent composite team to conduct probe

Atty. Glenn Chong, the staunch election reform advocate, is calling COMELEC to form an independent composite team from the NBI, PNP, DOJ, DICT and National Privacy Commission who will conduct the probe on the alleged hacking of COMELEC servers to avoid whitewash and punish the guilty.

Atty. Chong found the statement of the COMELEC Spokesperson James Jimenez alarming because the latter even questioned the veracity of the reported hacking. [Link here]

Atty. Chong suspected that the COMELEC Spokesman dismissed the alleged hacking because if proven true, some people in COMELEC can be sued for violation of the Data Privacy Act.

Atty. Chong recalled that in the 2016 hacking incident, former COMELEC Chairman Bautista was sued because of the so-called Data Privacy Act.

Hence, Atty. Chong wants an independent body to conduct a probe on the latest scandal rocking the poll body to prevent whitewash and hold the people responsible liable.

Here are some of the comments of netizens in reaction to Atty. Chong’s FB post.

Comelec is overdue for a complete and thorough makeover. In the old days this was done by lining them all up against the wall; nowadays we should just jail the criminals among them and kick out the rest. This agency is a festering swamp of corruption and incompetence. It is beyond redemption and should be really replaced by a new institution that is professionally staffed and run by people of integrity and competence. And it should be accountable to the courts and to our representatives.

Some netizens want manual counting in light of the incident to prevent election fraud.

Why d magic now??

Mas maigi ang counting nalang sa balota? Nong una ganyan walang daya? Lahat makita ng tao? Atty. Glenn Chong Salamat sa suporta. God Always with you? 🙏❤✌👍

In effect, he denied that it happened.
