Critics are asking why the US helping government troops in Marawi rather than Russia or China? Read why!

Several news outlets including GMA News reported the presence of Americans in Marawi extending military assistance to the Armed Forces in the battle to regain total control of Marawi.

As soon as the critics and haters of Duterte heard the news, they descended upon social media poking fun at President Duterte for eating his words that the Philippines do not need America.

However, when the going gets tough in Marawi, here comes little brother Philippines calling for help from big brother USA.

Remember, PRRD was saying those things when Obama was still president of the US. But when Trump assumed office, PRRD has been toning down his rhetoric against the US since he and Donald sings beautiful music together.

But,If hey before jumping on the bandwagon and join the bash party against Duterte, international relations expert Sass Rogando Sasot explains why the Duterte government and the US are in this together once again in Marawi, notwithstanding Duterte’s earlier statements against the US.

Read the enlightening post below.

1. So why did the Duterte Administration seek the technical assistance of the Americans?

Simple: It’s necessary. Duterte’s ego bows to necessity.

2. Does it diminish the independent foreign policy position of the President?

No. Independent foreign policy means the Philippines will conduct her diplomatic relations, according to her own national interests, without being controlled by another state. Besides, the Philippines and the US are still military allies.

Trump asked for Duterte’s help regarding the Korean Peninsula crisis, why can’t Duterte ask for US help? Tit for tat.

3. Why didn’t the Philippines ask the help of China and Russia?

We don’t have established military cooperation agreement with China and Russia yet. Our military needs technical assistance immediately, and the US could provide it pronto. Furthermore, asking China or Russia to intervene, while the Americans are in the Philippines, could complicate the situation. Having the military of two or more geopolitical rivals present in your territory at the same time is simply courting trouble.

Note: [UPDATE: 11 June 2017, 13.42 NLD Time – Duterte denied asking for help from the Americans]

Netizen Sarah Ysmael Arriola shared her input to explain the US presence in Marawi:

“We have an existing Mutual Defense Treaty. The Americans are obligated to provide technical assistance.

Articles II, III, and V Mutual Defense Treaty:

ARTICLE II. In order more effectively to achieve the objective of this Treaty, the Parties separately and jointly by self-help and mutual aid will maintain and develop their individual and collective capacity to resist armed attack.

ARTICLE III. The Parties, through their Foreign Ministers or their deputies, will consult together from time to time regarding the implementation of this Treaty and whenever in the opinion of either of them the territorial integrity, political independence or security of either of the Parties is threatened by external armed attack in the Pacific.

ARTICLE V. For purposes of ARTICLE IV, an armed attack on either of the Parties is deemed to include an armed attack on the metropolitan territory of either of the Parties, or on the island territories under its jurisdiction in the Pacific Ocean, its armed forces, public vessels or aircraft in the Pacific”
