President Rodrigo Duterte pledged to extend P2 billion worth of financial aid to victims of quake that hit Surigao City and neighboring towns Friday evening.
Duterte broke the news as he spoke before residents of Surigao City on Sunday.
“Naa koy buhian nga gamay nga kwarta para sa mga biktima (I am going to release a little amount for all the victims.)” [GMA News]
In Duterte fashion, he said: “Is P2 billion enough…?” This was greeted with laughter from the crowd.
After his speech, the president led the distribution of drinking water and food packs to residents.
A state of calamity has been declared in Surigao City due to the extent of damage to infrastructures and other public utility services brought about by the powerful quake.
Surigao City Airport is closed for a month because of the damage caused by the powerful quake.
