Female physician slams Hontiveros proposal for barangay-based intervention and rehabilitation of drug dependents

A News5 meme attributed to Sen. Hontiveros pushing for a barangay-based health intervention and rehabilitation of drug dependents has been criticized online.

In addition, Hontiveros criticized the construction of rehabilitation facilities calling them white elephants.

Credits to News5 for the meme.

The Hontiveros’ proposal has been met with skepticism on social media. Some have been making a mockery of the senator.

Meanwhile, Dr. Andrea Carigma of UST wrote an open letter addressed to Hontiveros to shoot down the senator’s proposal before it can even gain traction.

Carigma writes:

Dear Senator Risa Hontiveros,

First: rehabilitation requires health professionals. As it is, barangays in this country are already left wanting for health care providers (kaya nga po may government funded medical scholarships na to address this concern. )

Second: some of the drug dependents are already in a state of neurological dysfunction that they may be a threat to the people around them.

Third: one of the purposes of the initial part of rehabilitation is to remove the dependent from the source of the addiction. If the drug source is just nearby, with minimal restraint from access to the dependent, then it would be counterproductive.

Fourth: having a large rehabilitation facility would have the advantage of centering medical services for all those who are enrolled in the program. Centering these would mean less cost – rather than having the medical providers all interspersed across the nation.

The only thing we need is for the local government units to coordinated with the mega-rehabilitation center. We already have it anyway. Sayang naman kung hindi gagamitin.

Sincerely,

A concerned citizen

Sheryll Hope Pelayo Dema-ala reacts: “Think first before you talk. In the barangay level? Look at the famous rehab centers in the world. They are in the isolated places, away from their friends who would lure them to drugs again. Secluded places senator so they can reflect and not to be disturbed by familiar faces. Secondly, barangay captain mo drug dealer. Third, do you have enough doctors and nurses to be in your rehab centers? Hire ka muna ng libo libo. Fourth, Na include na ba yan sa recent budget. WALA. So why talk about this NONSENSE? Saang school ba sya nag graduate?”

Oinal Elfie says: “Barangay based drug rehab? Rehab facilities need trained technical staffs which bangays dont have & cant afford. Better to have major rehab centers with enough trained personnels & facilities.
rehab client should be far from source communities to cut ties from network.”

Mark Anthony Pino “LOL RISA, bakit di mo ginawa yan noon pa?
