Following Karen Davila’s tweet on ‘fake news’ law, Thinking Pinoy has some words for her: Please Karen, stop publishing fake news!

Listening to TV broadcasters criticize public officials on their TV show, one gets the impression that they are a bunches of know-it-all, who hold the answers of the nation’s ills.

Karen Davila of ABS-CBN, a vocal critic of Duterte, got a taste of her own medicine on social media after tweeting about the fake news law.

Davila’s tweet has generated more than 10,000 likes, 4,000 plus re-tweets 24 hours after it hit online.

Netizens have different take of the ‘fake news’ law as shown in the comments of netizens below.

Netizen J. Carlos Ramirez said this is a form of censorship targeting administration critics only.

Netizen Chose2Blv said the law applies to everyone except those who are Duterte supporters.

Netizen Eddie Kho remarked that pardons have been readied by Duterte for Mocha, Andanar, Badoy, Sasot and the rest of fake news gang of Duterte.

Kent Donguines joked that President Duterte is taking the initiative to remove Mocha from her government post via this law.

If Pres. Duterte was subjected to ridicule by his critics, Karen Davila has her fair share of bashers too.

Netizen Mark Shinoda corrected Karen Davila for using the word ‘spreading’ in her tweet.

Shinoda added that publishing is different from sharing it on social media.

On Facebook, Sass Rogando Sasot called out Karen Davila for committing a mortal sin of failing to fact-check her tweet.

“Ms Karen Davila,

Matagal na pong krimen sa Pilipinas ang pagpapakalat ng FAKE NEWS that will endanger the public. Art. 154 of Revised Penal Code po.

” Unlawful use of means of publication and unlawful utterances. — The penalty of arresto mayor and a fine ranging from P200 to P1,000 pesos shall be imposed upon:

…Any person who by means of printing, lithography, or any other means of publication shall publish or cause to be published as news any false news which may endanger the public order, or cause damage to the interest or credit of the State.”

Mag-conduct ka kasi ng RESEARCH ateng.

RESEARCH, noun: “the systematic investigation into and study of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions.”

Ang laki-laki ng sweldo mo, di ka man lang mag-RESEARCH sa mga pinagsasabi mo?”

RJ Nieto aka Thinking Pinoy also has some harsh advice for Karen Davila in light of her controversial fake news law tweet.

Dear @iamkarendavila,

In as far as “fake news”, RA 10951 does nothing but increase penalties for what’s already prohibited under the revised penal code. Publishing fake news that is detrimental to state interests has always been a crime, even before this new RA. Moreover, it is the publication of fake news, not spreading it, that is the crime.

Comprehension skills, please. For your sake, please spend less time at the salon and more in the library. You know, what’s in your head is just as important as, if not more important than, what’s sprinkled on it.

Please Karen, stop publishing fake news.

Tough Love,
