DepEd has been mocked and heavily criticized after errors in the learning modules distributed to school children started surfacing on social media barely days after the school opening.
Even Broadway star Lea Salonga couldn’t help but cuss at the people behind the learning modules for mistaking an owl for an ostrich.
“For the love of……. there aren’t enough curse words in my vocabulary for this s***!!! THAT IS AN OWL, YOU IDIOTS!!! Link here.
Former La Salle History professor Van Ybiernas remarked he did not find this surprising and in fairness to the Duterte admin, which some critics tried to pin the blame, the issue of DepEd textbooks having inaccuracies isn’t new.
In a Facebook post, Ybiernas confessed he used to work as a reviewer of DepEd textbooks when the President was not yet named Duterte and enumerated the problems he noted:
Basically, DepEd wants the reviewers to finish the job ASAP claimed Ybiernas. But he refused to cooperate and went over everything, line after line, suspecting the author was crap though he was proven wrong.
With that being said, Ybiernas claimed DepEd prefers the textbook review done in a hurry because it cannot wait to pay the contractors and be done with them fast.
Ybiernas said this problem is not unique to DepEd. Even mainstream media refuse to hire good editors that is why their graphics are not error-free. Why? Because nobody wants to pay good money to editors. Same goes with PR companies.

“Nag review ako dati ng textbook para sa DepEd noong hindi pa Duterte ang pangalan ng presidente at ito ang problema:
“Minamadali ka nila. Hahaha.E ako pa naman, I went through everything line after line with the suspicion that the author was full of shit (Kahit hindi naman). Wala akong tiwala. I confirmed every point. Niresearch ko yung mga punto at example kung tama ba.’
“Kaso DepEd doesn’t have time for that kind of meticulous shit.
“Tapos dahil isang team kami, nagagalit yung ibang team members sa akin dahil napaka fastidious ko sa pag check ng textbook. Hahaha.
“Gusto na kasi matapos ng lahat at mabayaran na. Hahaha.
“Huwag magtaka kung bakit ganyan ang sitwasyon ng mga textbooks at modules na yan.
“It’s not just a problem now. Matagal na yan.
“It’s not just DepEd. Maski media hindi na kumukuha ng matinong editors kaya pamali mali ang mga graphics nila, yung mga articles atbp.
“Nobody wants to pay good money to the editors nowadays.
“Maski mga marketing at PR companies. Ayaw magbayad ng magaling na editor.Paspasan. Patakbuhin ang nilalabas. It is what it is.
