Leyte Mayor told: “Surrender in 24 hours, otherwise, I will order the police to shoot you in sight” – Duterte

A small town Mayor in Leyte has been ordered by President Duterte to surrender in 24 hours, otherwise, he will get shot on sight, Malacanang spokesman announced recently.

Presidential Spokesman Ernesto Abella told the press that President Duterte is demanding Albuera, Leyte Mayor Ronaldo Espinosa Sr. and his son Kerwin Espinosa to surrender immediately, “on the grounds of drug-trafficking and coddling.”

If both fail to surrender within 24 hours, an “order of ‘shoot on sight’ will be given if they resist and endanger the lives of arresting police officers.

The presidential ultimatum was an offshoot of an incident days ago wherein the bodyguards of the Mayor Espinosa were arrested in a buy-bust operation in Barangay Benolho. Seized from the suspects were around 237 grams of suspected shabu with a street value estimated at around P1.9 million.

According to the article published the Philippine Daily Inquirer, the buy-bust operation was conducted around 5:30 p.m. on Thursday at a tennis court near the houses of the mayor and his son in Sitio Tinago, Barangay Benolho in this town.

Arrested in the sting operation were the following: Jessie Ocarez, 34; and Marcelo Adorco, 40, Jose Antipuesto, 36; Ernesto Dumalat, 20; and Jeffrey Pesquera, 39.

Jose Antipuesto works as the caretaker of the mayor’s fighting cocks but police reports said, he was involved in illegal activity thus a buy-bust operation was hatched to entrap the suspect.

The Albuera Police Chief said an undercover policeman posed as a buyer and bought P300 worth of shabu from Antipuesto.

The moment the undercover policeman announced it was a sting operation, several men at the tennis court scampered to different directions. Five of them were cornered by the police operatives.

Four men decided to take refuge at the Mayor’s son, Kerwin and locked the gate. Please click the link here to read the full story.

Since then, Mayor Rolando Espinosa has gone on leave while Kerwin Espinosa has reportedly been in hiding since Duterte won the May 2016 election.
