The announcement of the presumptive President Rodrigo Duterte that 4 Cabinet positions are reserved for the Communist Party has raised some eyebrows from the netizens.
In a Facebook post shared more than 1600 times as of Wednesday morning, Michael Tan Defensor popularly known as Mike Defensor published an article to calm the frazzled nerves of the netizens who were taken by surprise by the announcement from the Duterte camp that Communist Party are invited to join the government.
In fact 4 slots with a Cabinet position, including the DENR, DSWD, the DOLE and the DAR are awaiting the takers from the Communist Party.
Well, according to former DENR Secretary Mike Defensor the general public has nothing to worry about because the Communist Party is not a shadowy organization out to kill and conquer our nation but a group of individuals who sincerely want change for the betterment of this country.
Check out the FULL TEXT of his post below:
Many were quite surprised when Presumptive President Rodrigo Duterte announced recently that he is giving the Communist Party 4 cabinet departments, namely; the DENR, DSWD, the DOLE and the DAR . The thought sends chills to the guileless, innocent in the goings on of the activist movement and those unexposed to the left. But to many student activists, the so called communists are those they go with to school, discuss with and join in immersions and rallies. There are those who continued the path of activism and became part of the communist movement. There also those who are now professionals who in their own small way contribute in the social transformation of our country. I admire the friends I had in UP who sacrificed their lives in joining the CPP-NPA when they could have chosen a more comfortable life when they had the means to do so and the competence to excel in a normal world. Amante Jimenez, UP student council chairperson and Roland De la Cruz, Adamson University chairperson (who died in the mountains) are a few of those individuals. We may disagree with the ideology they have embraced but we cannot question the integrity and sincerity of these individuals who have sacrificed their future and their lives for the poor of this nation.
I was a member of the Kabataang Makabayan during my college days. My unit then was in the UP and later on in the youth sector of the National Union of Students of the Philippines. The CPP gave an orientation to my colleagues in the NUSP and as a student was part of the CPP. I made mention of this because I know of so many people who were part of the Communist Party which may be unknown to many. Sen Francis Pangilinan, Sec Rene Velasco, Sec Nani Braganaza, Sec and Amb Bobbi Tiglao, Usec Efren Moncupa, Cong Miro Quimbo, Cong Kit Belmonte, Mayor Ed Pamintuan, Atty Ruel Pulido, Philhealth Pres Alexander Padilla, UP Prof Raymund Agapito, among others. The names I listed were those friends from my student days and those I worked with after college. There are still many which I failed to list down and I apologize. My point in writing this is to inform my friends that the Communist Party is not a shadowy organization out to kill and conquer our nation but a group of individuals who sincerely want change for the betterment of this country.
I am quite close to some officals of the military and the police. I know that situations like this can cause uneasiness and anxiety to them. It is not so much because of ideology but many of our soldiers die in encounters with the NPA guerillas. So for them, the fight is not just political but personal as many of their colleagues and men have died fighting the so-called communist. But I also know that the idealist soldiers want change. When you talk to the men in uniform, many of them speak of change as a communist would. Many of our military and police officers died poor, integrity intact in the service of our nation. My cousin Col. Jun Parcon of the marines, who is a medal of valor and a TOYM awardee, lives in a small apartment and continous to live a spartan life along with his family.
Do not be scared of the CPP entering the cabinet. This may be the step towards finally ending a decades old war which commands the biggest armed resistance in the whole world. The CPP are composed of real individuals who care, eat, emphatize and cry like all of us. The departments mentioned are where they can effectuate change and reform instead of protesting and carrying arms in fighting for the rights of our people. If this happens, the next step is to lay down their arms and work for peace and progress of the Filipino nation.

when i said if du30 is the bitterest of pill to take, to have the change desired and craved for, i would take it all the way…..i voted for du30 and he won
now,he prescribes a pill or pills to take.
i say, let us take it… cpp-npa at the 4 cabinet posts.
change is sure to come
Take the pill. But I did not vote for Duterte. Do I have a choice? I have to swallow just like you.
Yes!……………………………………………………………………
Agree with the article and proposition but definitely not with MIKE DEFENSOR saying it… si HELLO GARCI eto at maraming nakulimbat sa bayan at gusto magbalik ng magnanakaw na kaalyado ni GMA…gutom na naman ang buwaya..,!!! Wag n wag k magkamali sa taong ito DIgong my President..!!!
Because Du30 won. Should the presidentiable you elected have won, then we have to swallow every agenda he wants implemented. Duterte won so, follow all the agendas we wanted to implement. Whoever wins prevail. Besides, this is the mandate of the majority.
Our newly elected President DIGONG must be in the right direction towards unifying the Filipino people who would jointly lift our country from poverty & stagnation brought about by the greedy oligarch and corrupt like PNoy et al.
amen brother…voted straight
I go for CPP in the core group of president rody’cabinet. I myself deepinside is a communist in principle.. my understanding of communism during college year at Mats College of Technology, was not about Arm Struggles, but Economic Struggles. .COMMUNISM IS FROM THE root word COMMUNE, which means, equality, example, equal distribution of WEALTH, my thinking now is FEDERAL FORM of GOVERNMENT Is tantamount to COMMUNISM, which is to is the best solution in unifying our divided country
I would take the dose if it is for the betterment of my family and friends in the Philippines, and for all my kababayans as a whole. I was an activist during my college days and have gone through a lot of hard and bitter life. What more challenge I couldn’t take?
Mike Defensor iscorrect in his observation.
Mike Defensor might be correct not to be afraid with the NPA, but what they’re doing behind is unforgivable. They resort to banditry and extortion. They’re cattle rustlers and if you don’t pay revolutionary tax they will burn the company’s heavy equipment and building, owner of a piggery and a poultry farm have to close because they butchered hundreds of pigs and chickens for their taking, ransacked farmers harvest, etc and force the peasants to join them or else you’ll be killed. How can we not be afraid when their ideology is extortion .
.
And this is why Mike Defensor ends in expressing hope that this act of assigning 4 of their own to the Cabinet might be the olive leaf that might encourage them to lay their arms and work for peace.
My ideal governmental system is that of Israel. A very efficient one with real communists working side by side with the right in keeping the whole nation work effectively for survival.
the likud party have muslims and communist too.
While heavily discriminating against 20% of their population who are Arabs; and slaughtering thousands in Gaza and illegally occupying land of the Palestinians to build illegal settlements. Get real. They left communism way behind in the few kibbutzim that still exist, and not even in all of them now.
Appreciate and I agree to youur ideas. They really want reforms but the government response are bullets, so they fight to protect themselves. Thank you Sir for sharing your convincing and truthful ideas.
I absolutely agree with Mike.
I strongly agree with Mike.
Very enlightening article.
What about china???
So true conrado, you hit it bullseye…
If they work for peace and progress, we should not worry about any organization that joins the government. The agenda should be what’s good for the country, what’s good for the people. It’s good, if they work together than fighting with each other. Make Philippines great and safe… That’s all we are asking.
Communism is an ideology, can they live with us in democracy without undermining our belief and imposing their own?
AS a communist who was once a legislator, what has Mike Defensor done for change?
What have you done for a change?
A ripple can only do so much against a tidal wave of corruption and oppression.
If he really want change, then why did he pick his friends, politicians who are already with taint of corruption like Villar? So he is the same as the old politicians, who favor his friends, classmates and what-have-you for his own benefit. I don’t lose hope, I will pray for him to fulfill his promise to the 16M who voted for him.
And you’re also the same people who thinks they know everything. Why noy run for president?
Where the ‘thumbs up’ button at?
I absolutely agree with you Ms. Ruby
hi sir im from denr im happy to see you again sana po kau na lang ulit ang secretary namin..
communist take over of the government.. that was the plan… .communist china.?
aLL TRUE WHAT MIKE DEFENSOR SAID, AGREE THE3 TO THE COMING OF THE NEW pHILIPPINES
Legalize first the cop
A thought provoking well-written essay. Worth trying though…
In my humble opinion, CPP, Communist Party of the Philippines, membership, is triggered by the social injustice and abuses done by the elitists towards the marginal members of our society. There is no clear ideological distinction what impel them to rebel against rich people monopolizing the benefits, the social welfare outlay and assistance intended for the poor, that the corrupt government officials plundered for their own benefit. They are the victims, of a hopelessly, and badly, managed country. The recently elected president, Duterte, will try to fix the broken system by using the victims of injustice to help craft an acceptable solution that corruption forced into the suffering humanity, that the nation could be proud of.
I agree with you Rolly Cavan! Well explained causes that triggerd the the organization of the rebel group. And Mike Defensor said very well how it all started. He mentioned few names who were successful. I was active in the founding of Kabataang Makabayan being one of the Student Leaders from Lyceum of the Philippines at the time. Our group were composed of Student Leaders from various colleges and universities officers of their respective Student Councils and Editors of their official publications who organized the Editors Guild.
We had the Student Councils Association of the Philippines (SCAP) then we had Conference Delegates (CONDA) for national Students conferences.
In organizing Kabataang Makabayan I may mention some Student Leaders who were then active among them Sai Gonzales Arthur Arthur Garcia Vic Reyes Marcelo Marquez Manny Lopez and Jose Maria Sison (Joma).
Our Adviser was Dr. Lansang.
Joma carried out the organization up to the founding of CCP I was already abroad at the time lost contact with them.
Forgive me but allow me to be at once simple and simplistic. Capitalism focuses on earning wealth. Communism focuses on distributing wealth according to need, and not by contribution in making that wealth.
All governments that have flirted with communism are dead, dying, or mutated into a bastardized form of capitalism.
The failure of communism is not surprising. If the system rewards you for not doing anything, who would want to do anything in the first place?
As for the elitists, the oligarchs, and the capitalists, shoo them away. Then try getting a job from a communist.
indeed very simplistic.
This is true. Mike D hasn’t read his history books on how communist started in a country like China and Russia, how many were killed and brutalized, how the best citizens left, what people’s remained were brainwashed and rights removed and they still believe it’s the path of injustice they are fighting…wait till communism takes over
I agree 100% on that statements, all we have to do is to trust the new president for the betterment of our country. Let us welcome and embrace the true and real change in our government. ” Mabuhay ang Bagong Presidente”. “Mabuhay ang CPP/NPA”. “: Mabuhay ang Pilipinas”
Many brilliant minds who will enter as Incoming Cabinet Members to join force in fixing the government’s system is very much welcome. I know our Presumtive President is brilliant in chosing the people to work with him. No reason to scare them. They too are Filipinos who are willing to serve their beloved country, the Philippines. Qualifications is up to the President. So, help him God.
Real communist don’t believe in God..it is written in their book ..social injustices committed by the government is used as an excuse to to promote their goal to create Utopia. back in the 80’s i have the opportunity to work with ex- NPA… she was a former catechist turned amasona. In her testimony, new recruits were being brainwashed about the evils of the government then later were being tested with their loyalty by killing anyone including their family members. she learned to kill an enemy by way of slow torture using a knife. one day during an encounter with the military she was caught by an officer who happens to be a devote christian. she was not only saved physically but spiritually by that encounter. I do not know what happens to the non NPA group especially those who works in the government. maybe they realized that after all communism is failing especially with the fall of communism in Germany, Russia and other countries. Even China realized that communist economic theory is not applicable in reality so they have to adopt instead the free world economy. As of the commies given by Digong positions in the government, maybe ok as long as they are not given positions in the military.
Just a timely application to Duterte to give him a cabinet position, what else is that for?
Kapal ng mukha nya, pagkatapos nyang depensahan arroyo administration. Hay nakuh… Pg yan napaupo ulit sa pwesto, walang gagawing matino yan.
filipinos were made to believe , communism must be feared n be vanished without a trace on philippine soil; communists ideologists never to be seen nor heard from, for democracy is d exact opposite of what communism is all about. we r far safe n at peace, without d communists. at this point in time, when d most powerful communist USSR of old, collapsed n showed d whole world communism flawed n failed, what have we to fear then that communism will gain a stronghold in d philippines , now or in d very near future?
here in japan, d center, d leftists, rightists, extremists, etc., r all very much represented n r actively participating in d political , social n economic affairs of d whole nation. they do hold government posts. they all do argue
no end on all issues, n then d strongest majority prevail everyone reaches a workable point n somehow an equilibrium at d stroke of d hour, before another cycle restarts all over again. we r in a world, where we give each other space, where we also listen, where we open our minds, where we learn from each other, where we try to be better. it is time to change.
#majority prevails, strike of d hour.
Mawawala lng ang cummunist if theres no more oppression in any level of government
Anu masasabi mo sa NPA extortion activities, Failure of giving Revolutionary Tax will result to burning of bus , property, company equipment .
Agree with u Leonardo
So Makati business club, Philippines Chambers of Commerce, and all the businesses club all over the Philippines be ready for the worst in the community, at Sana wag naman.
i definitely agree, bring them in.
Tama ka jan….kaya wala asenso pinas puro reklamo..give him a chance…give ourself a chance to change..
Government made us believe the worst side of communism to the extent of creating fear among us, Its about time to change that artificial or instilled fear among us . True there are dark side of it and good one’s too, it all depends on the country and the leaders that run the show .
There used to be communists in the form of the NPA where I live today. This place used to be a killing field. If I am sitting where I am now as I write 30 years ago, the NPA will kill me, a civilian, to loot my corpse. The fear of communists are not at all artificial, it is as real as a bullet to the head.
Big no to comunist…
Mike Defensor, Go to Davao and start licking some boots.
I congratulate Mr Mike Defensor for somehow elaborating the puzzling thought of the incoming good President. And to me, even the active combatant leaders of NPA to take key positions in the government will signal the end of insurgency. If only the peace negotiation would include a guarantee for absolute amnesty which means free from trial of all crimes committed, then am sure all of them will go down and rejoin the meanstream of society.
The CPP ‘sincerely’ want change for the betterment of the country. The fact the CPP has an armed wing called the NPA that for the past decades have been shooting at the government and civilians alike, I doubt the logic of Defensor’s assessment.
I do not know why Duterte insists on the communists. It is a failed concept of government, the only remaining success can be found in a very compromised form in the PRC. If the country implements any integration of communism into the government, the struggle, sacrifices, and failures will ultimately lead back to the solution which is to avoid communism in the first place.
Here, the CPP-NPA numbers about 4,000 members. Why bend the nation to accommodate an all but irrelevant insurgency movement? One of the reasons they still exist is because Duterte has kept them in safe haven in his own city of Davao, where, aside from a few attacks from the Philippine military and police, the NPA has roamed relatively free to commit extortion, murder, arson, and other crimes.
Communists in government will do nothing but scare away business. Communists will demand that their outdated, impractical, and unfeasible ideals of equity and equality are forced into the economy. They will scare away the so-called evils: oligarchs, elites, and capitalists, and the economy will be left with just the communists who, despite their grandiose principles that favor the proletariat, the laborers, and the peasants, cannot give anyone a job.
TRULY SIR, VERY SMART POINT OF VIEW!!!…I SALUTE YOU!!!
How you will salute a man who loses his dignity in favoring of the arroyo administration. Look back on our history few years ago when he tried to defend Mrs. Gloria Arroyo until her very last day in Malacanang?
He has no right to discuss on those matter. Maybe somebody from a man with credibility but not from his mouthed especially not from his opinion!!!
The CPP is a communist organization who wants the country to be communist by hook or by crook. And we know that there is in no way they can do that in a peaceful way (if you know my drift). If that way involves being in the government they will do it to advance their cause. For change? Certainly. But whether you will like the change or not depends on you. I’m just wondering why do we always give these communists advantage where Philippines get little. We incorporated a few thousand MNLF into the ranks of the AFP after they “surrendered” the armed struggle. But to incorporate or offer a communist a position in the government without the CPP giving up thearmed struggle is a different story. It’s like getting a communist from North Korea to lead an important government position hoping North Korea will become democratic. Well, give it a try. If things go right congratulations:)
unity is coming.
Systematically and PURELY REVERSE PSYCH!!!…remember how they were CONCEIVED ( cpp-npa )!!!…PHL’s the very LAST country to DECEIVE!!!…still the COMMIES are betting for PEOPLE’s IGNORANCE!!!
What’s the credibility of this man talking? Bka nkakalimutan natin, tuta yan Ni arroyo.
Umalis nga tau sa Aquino administration, ung come back nman Ni Gloria Arroyo cabinets ang papalit… Hope the new administration will not allow the people behind Mrs Arroyo’s dark era will not be visible again in the NXT 6 years.
Pustahan tau, palalayain c Mrs. Gloria Arroyo sa duterte’s administration.the meeting of Mr. Lavina with Mrs. Arroyo is a well-cooked dish and no wonder one of these days, her name will be clean despite of the evidences against her.
Capitalism is not compatible with democracy !!! Communism, if it is a really possible, is the true realization of democracy !!! At least theoretically.
Cure the roots of society sickness ,decades of arm struggle between brothers and end of undefined solution of the rich rulers…Mayor Duterte you have a genius mind…relieve and prioritized the oppressed.I support you
As long as they will maintain the democratic process that we are enjoying.. Like you can speak our grievances to the government without fear for your life. The democratic process of choosing our leaders and respecting our human rights, upholding the constitution. They can preach their ideology but not forcing it to people. Who ever goes to their side because of their own free will not because they were brain wash to think the way they do. They are also Filipinos and their rights are protected by the constitution which our grandparents and parents ratified in an homest and peacfull plebiscites. As long as they adhere to the democratic process that all Filipinos are enjoying today. They by all means they can join the government in helping create a better
nation for the future generations.
I voted Duterte because I believe in his platform, whatever his plan I i is for the betterment of the Filipino People, I support him all the way!
Whatever is good for the Filipinos? Hoping for the best governance.
