The buzzword these days is “change is coming” as President-elect Duterte prepares to formally assume the presidency in two weeks time.
With that being said, isn’t it high time to revisit our history and see what merits a second look?
Speaking of which, a netizen and an esteemed priest has started a debate on changing an important date in our country’s history.
A good start would be changing once again the day we Filipinos commemorate our Independence Day.
In a Facebook post published by Fr. Jun Mercado, the priest of the Order of Mary Immaculate contends that the current date at which the country celebrates our Independence Day has a “traitorous” beginning.
Let me quote Fr. Jun Mercado why he said so and read:
If history shall have it, I would prefer the Magdiwang proclamation of Independence in Pugad Lawin later known at the Cry of Balintawak on August 23, 1896!
The priest explained further and wrote:
Definitely we want to trace our revolutionary spirit to the Magdiwang Proclamation and not to the Traitor Emilio Aguinaldo of Magdalo who murdered Bonifacio and his companions in Cavite and Gen. Antonio Luna and companions in NE.

Contested Independence Day…
Is it myth or for real…? When I was growing up.. We used to celebrate it on July 4th… Referring to the July 4th, 1946 Independence Day. Then Pres. Dadong by the stroke of a pen moved it to June 12 marking the Magdalo proclamation of independence in June 12th,1898.
I belong to the Magdiwang Tradition and definitely not to the traitor Magdalo that sold us to Spain at the Surrender and Bribe at Pact of Biak na Bato and then sold us again to the US in 1903!
If history shall have it, I would prefer the Magdiwang proclamation of Independence in Pugad Lawin later known at the Cry of Balintawak on August 23, 1896!
So choose:
July 4, 1946;
June 12, 1898; and
August 23, 1896.Definitely we want to trace our revolutionary spirit to the Magdiwang Proclamation and not to the Traitor Emilio Aguinaldo of Magdalo who murdered Bonifacio and his companions in Cavite and Gen. Antonio Luna and companions in NE.
I prefer to be associated to heroes and NOT to traitors and murderers of the Magdalo Tradition..
So I do not celebrate the Magdalo Proclamation of June 12, 1898!
Well, look at Magdalo Trillanes…! Need any proof…?

This make sense
Fr jun, it would be very unlikely to brand aguinaldo as a traitor…. We and you cannot say that he was a traitor simply because it was written and narrated and passed to us by those person of different understanding and interpretation…. But one thing that we and you are certain , that aguinaldo’s cause of action was very important on that very moment to make our freedom in place…. If not the so called treachery of aguinaldo their must be another person to perform that action….. To fulfill the what we have now in our history…. Just understand fr. Jun….. Just like Judas in Jesus life here on earth…. The Father in heaven already put judas to fulfill what He want…. We and you cannot simply say judas was a traitor because if not judas that sell Jesus to the jews their must be someone else will do… Just to fulfill the scripture….. No one knows… After we and you die… We will shock be seeing judas in heaven … because he was just doing what was written in the scripture……
