NHA official on Duterte being hands on in building of Marawi temporary shelters: “Talagang sabihin natin, meron syang political will”

Erwin Tulfo of PTV4 highlighted the disparity between the temporary shelters built for Yolanda survivors and the Marawi displaced residents in a video report.

According to Erwin Tulfo, the Yolanda temporary shelters “were not only small with 10sqm each, every unit doesn’t have their own toilets as well.”

“An ongoing investigation regarding this matter has been conducted because of the alleged overpriced for the program,” Tulfo added.

Supposedly, each unit will only cost the government over P100,00 each but ended up costing the government P800,000.

The government, Tulfo stressed, is firm this thing will not happen again under the Duterte administration.

Duterte’s political will

Engr. Victor Balba, Head of Operations NHA whne sought for comment regarding the Yolanda housing scandal told Tulfo: “Natuto na tayo eh. Ano yung mga mali na ginawa noon, ayaw na natin ulitin. Yun yon.”

The NHA showed Erwin Tulfo the sample unit of the temporary shelters that will be built it Marawi.

Tulfo learned that each unit of the temporary shelters for the Marawi displaced residents will cost P160,000 each, with a living space of 22sqm.

Compared to the Yolanda temporary shelters made of coco lumber and light materials, the Marawi temporary shelters is built using galvanized steel plates for the exterior and light materials for the interior.

The unit is single-detached with bigger living space compared to the Yolanda temporary houses that can accommodate 6-7 household members.

Tulfo reported that around 2,000 people are expected to live in the temporary shelters beginning December as President Duterte is hands on to make sure the shelters are built on schedule.

Balba said: Si Presidente talagang hands-on yun eh. Talagang every two weeks yata andun sya. Pumunta doon sa ground zero, napunta doon sa transition shelter site. Laging andoon sya. Iba talaga ang Presidente natin ngayon…ang sipag. Siguro may bearing na rin. Talagang sabihin natin, meron syang political will.

Meanwhile, Tulfo reported that the government will build satellite offices for PTV and Radyo Pilipinas in Marawi City.
