The news that President Duterte threatened to cancel the Visiting Forces Agreement of the Philippines with the US in reaction to the cancellation of Senator Bato dela Rosa’s US visa has been the buzz on social media.
The critics agree that President Duterte’s threat to cancel VFA is detrimental to the interest of the country by allowing his personal interest, his friendship with Senator Bato dela Rosa whose US visa was cancelled by the US, to obscure his judgment.
However, netizen blogger Noel Sarifa look at the threat of President Duterte to cancel VFA in response to the US visa cancellation of Senator bato in a different light.
Sarifa wrote on Facebook that President Duterte’s tirade versus the US is just consistent with his stance that the US should not meddle with our internal affairs.
“Pinakita ulit ni President Duterte na hindi sya papayag na mangialam ang Amerika sa internal affairs ng bansa. Do we need the Americans or the Americans needs us??
Sarifa wondered why the US is so eager to have de Lima go free when she is facing accusations of on involvement in the illegal trade. On this note, Sarifa can’t help but speculate about the US’s keen interest in de Lima. Are there can of worms waiting to be opened and pressuring the Duterte admin to release the senator is just a preventive measure?
“Why is it that Amerika is so eager for De Lima’s release? She is facing accusations of involvement in a drug trade. Will the United States proved her innocence? Or, are there cans of worms waiting to be opened and this is just there preventive measure. We can only speculate. But then, why would the US of A spend so much effort for De Lima? She is not an american citizen. What is more important for Americans? Our relationship with them or De Lima?”
Sarifa remarked that President Duterte is sending a strong message to the world and they should listen good.
“President Duterte’s strong stand against this issue is sending a strong message to the world, we are nobody’s slave and bullying will never make this country bow to anyone, not even the United States of America.”
