Wrong analogy|Ateneo alumnus slams a senator for nixing Martial law extension, says Martial law not solution to rice crisis

Wrong analogy!

Ateneo de Davao alumnus Monching Lumantas berates Senator Kiko Pangilinan for opposing Martial Law extension in Mindanao because it did not stop the Sultan Kudarat bombing recently. Instead, Pangilinan wants PRRD to address the rice crisis skyrocketing commodities of prices and Martial law extension is not one of them.

Pangilinan’s statement has inspired News5 to create a meme bearing the senator’s statement.

The caption reads:

The existing Martial Law proclamation failed to prevent the bombing so why would an extension prevent a future bombing?

Up until now, the region is stricken by hunger due to the rice crisis and high prices of commodities. This requires immediate action, and Martial law extension is not one of them.

Moving forward, Lumantas stressed to Pangilinan the distinction between the rice crisis and problems of rebellion and terrorism in case the senator was confused.

“The rice crisis and high prices of commodities need economic measures. Terrorism and rebellion require a military solution.”

Lumantas argued that the presence of the 5 terrorist groups in Mindanao as per AFP report warrants Martial law extension.

According to the AFP, there are five(5) terrorist group threats in Mindanao today namely : the Abu Sayyaf(ASG), the Maute Group, the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF), Foreign Terrorists and the New People’s Army (NPA).

Lumantas admitted that despite the proclamation of Martial law, these terrorist groups continue to harass various parts in Mindanao by engaging in kidnap-for-ransom, ambush and IED attacks, the recent of which was the Sultan Kudarat bombing.

Since the imposition of Martial Law in Mindanao at the height of the Marawi siege, these groups continue to inflict violence and sow terror in Mindanao by engaging in kidnap for ransom/execution of foreign and local citizens in Basilan and Sulu, massive recruitment in Lanao del Sur, ambush/road attacks in Maguindanao and North Cotabato, bombing operations the recent of which was the IED explosion in Isulan, Sultan Kudarat.

Lumantas argued that Martial law extension is necessary to neutralize these terror groups in their training grounds in Mindanao unless the people opposed of Martial law extension wants the terror groups to bring their mayhem at the heart of Metro Manila.

Do you want them to infiltrate and wreak havoc in Metro Manila and the rest of the country? They have to be neutralized right at the heart of their training camps and safehouses. They must be stopped at the shoreline borders, military checkpoints and airport landing strips.

Lumantas ended his FB post by leaving Pangilinan something to chew on.

Allow me to give you a bit of advice Kiko. You ain’t a Mindanaoan. Check the news first before you open your mouth. You cannot talk about economic development without peace. Just do your job as a lawmaker. Do not speak like you are a 4-star General or the National Security Adviser. Never teach the President on what to do. He is the Commander-in-Chief. The buck stops with him.
